Authentic Southern Oxtails Recipe - Tender & Flavorful Soul Food Classic

These Southern oxtails simmer low and slow until the meat falls right off the bone. The gravy turns deep and rich from the browning, beef broth, and a touch of brown sugar. Serve them over rice with collard greens and cornbread for a true soul food plate.

Ingredients
  

  • 2- 1/2 lbs Oxtails
  • 1 Cup Onion
  • 2 Cloves Garlic
  • 1 Carrot
  • 4 Cups Beef Broth
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 2 Tbsps Browning
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Thyme
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper

Method
 

  1. Make sure you have thoroughly cleaned your oxtails.
  2. Add the browning and Worcestershire sauce to the oxtails. The browning will give the oxtails it's rich color.
  3. Season with the salt and pepper and mix well.
  4. Melt your butter then saute the onions, garlic and carrots for 3 minutes to form your flavor base.
  5. Add the oxtails to the pot the sprinkle with paprika, onion powder, garlic powder and thyme.
  6. Add the beef broth and water then bring to a light simmer.
  7. Add the brown sugar then cover and allow it to cook on medium-low for 3-1/2-4 hours.

Notes

Make sure to clean your oxtails before cooking. If you want thicker gravy, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water, then stir it into the pot during the last 20 minutes of cooking.
