Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ziti pasta
  • 2 23 oz jars marinara sauce
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 Tbsp fresh parsley chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 16 oz ricotta cheese
  • 16 oz mozzarella cheese shredded (divided)
  • 1 cup parmesan cheese grated (divided)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 1/2 tsp salt divided
  • 2 tsp black pepper divided
  • 1/2 tsp salt for pasta water, from transcript

Method
 

  1. Preheat to 350°F.
  2. In a bowl, combine ricotta, 1/2 cup mozzarella, and 1/2 cup parmesan. Add parsley and egg. Season with 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp black pepper. Mix well; set aside.
  3. Boil water, add 1/2 tsp salt, cook ziti 10 minutes, drain, and set aside.
  4. Heat Dutch oven over medium. Add ground beef and onion; cook 3 minutes.
  5. Add remaining salt and pepper, then garlic; brown 3 more minutes.
  6. Stir in marinara sauce, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes.
  7. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 10 minutes.
  8. Sauce in dish → pasta → mozzarella → ricotta mixture. Repeat: sauce → pasta → mozzarella.
  9. Add final sauce layer, then top with remaining mozzarella and remaining parmesan.
  10. Cover with foil and bake 20 minutes. Uncover and bake 15 minutes more.
