Copycat Fried Apple Pie

These copycat fried apple pies are made with tart Granny Smith apples, brown sugar, butter, apple cider vinegar, and warm spices tucked inside flaky pastry and fried until golden brown. They are crisp on the outside, tender and sweet on the inside, and perfect for dessert or a special homemade treat.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 Granny Smith apples peeled and cut into small pieces
  • 1 package frozen pie crust or puff pastry
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 6 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Method
 

  1. Peel and cut apples into small, even pieces. Set aside.
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Add apples, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg. Stir well.
  4. Cook on medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until liquid reduces to a thick syrupy consistency.
  5. Remove from heat. Let filling cool for several minutes.
  6. Roll out pie crust into a 10x12 inch rectangle. Cut into three 10-inch strips.
  7. Spoon filling onto one end of each strip. Fold dough over to form a rectangular pocket.
  8. Press edges firmly with a fork to seal all around. Trim any excess dough.
  9. Heat vegetable oil to 350°F in a deep skillet or Dutch oven.
  10. Fry pies until deep golden brown
