Ingredients

  • 6 cups milk (preferably whole milk)
  • cups cups heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
  • cups bittersweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • teaspoon salt

Method

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the milk and heavy whipping cream. Place over medium-low heat and gently warm the mixture, stirring occasionally. Do not let it boil.
  2. Stir in the sweetened condensed milk until fully combined. Continue heating until the mixture reaches a light simmer with small bubbles forming around the edges, but not boiling.
  3. Add the salt, vanilla extract, and bittersweet chocolate chips to the saucepan. Whisk continuously until the chocolate chips are completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the hot chocolate simmer gently for 10–15 minutes, stirring frequently. Do not allow it to boil. The mixture should thicken slightly and become velvety.
  5. Remove from heat and carefully ladle the hot chocolate into mugs. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings such as whipped cream, marshmallows, or shaved chocolate.

Notes

  • Use bittersweet chocolate chips only. Semi-sweet chocolate chips will not work as well in this recipe and can make the hot chocolate too sweet without the same rich flavor.
  • For a thicker hot chocolate, simmer a bit longer or add a few extra tablespoons of chocolate chips.
  • For a lighter texture, add a splash of milk to thin it out to your liking.
